Bioethanol
Bioethanol (or ethanol) is a renewable substitute for gasoline (petrol) made from the carbohydrates in plants (such as wheat, sugar beet, corn, sugarcane) through a process of fermentation, distillation, and dehydration. It can be blended at up to 5% for use in any petrol-based car engine without modification and currently in the UK approximately 3% of the fuel you fill up with at any service station will be ethanol (biodiesel if a Diesel engine).
Vivergo will produce 420 million litres of ethanol per year using locally sourced animal feed grade wheat. This will make us the largest ethanol producer in the UK and one of the biggest in Europe, representing around a third of the UK's 2012/13 requirements under the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).
Our ethanol will offer greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in excess of 50% over standard petrol production, the equivalent of removing 180,000 cars from the road each year. It will also come with certification to prove that it is made from sustainably grown wheat.
Our ethanol will be single-specification, anhydrous fuel grade ethanol, suitable for the UK and European fuels markets. Vivergo's facility includes both port access and road tanker loading, offering flexibility on logistics and market reach.
